A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
I do not need to tell you all that we are living in chaotic and unpredictable times. Despite all the chaos around you, you can live without fear. Martin Luther based his great hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” on this Psalm. In it, the Psalmist says that God’s people should not fear because He is your Refuge in tribulations, our Strength in trials, and your Help in troubles (46:1).
God is your refuge in the midst of danger (46:1). You can trust that no matter how bad your circumstances become, His love and care for you will never change (Rom 8:38-39). Have confidence that He is Good (Ps 34:8). Know that God is working in all of your circumstances to produce greater endurance, with a goal towards your maturity in Christ (James 1:2-4). This is your ultimate good (Rom 8:28-30).
God is also your source of strength when life is hard (46:1). God does not leave you without the strength to endure the trials of life (Col 1:11; 1 Peter 4:11). The Holy Spirit gives you the strength the live righteously, and the endurance to carry on in trying times. His grace is perfected in your weakness; trust in Him (2 Cor 12:9).
God is your present help in times of trouble (46:1). He knows when you are in difficult situations and that you are in need. He is your Ebenezer, your rock of help (1 Sam 7:12). In accordance with His will, He may not choose to deliver you out of the trial, but instead give you the strength to endure it.
Believers, you can live without fear, even if the world falls into chaos, because God is with you (46:2-3).
