GOD IS LOVE.

1 John 4.8

I am finding that digging deeper into depths of God’s love is like trying to empty the oceans with a bucket. But oh what sweet ‘bucket fills’ of divine love I have had bathe over my soul in the last few weeks!

As God’s essence and very nature is love we have learnt that His love is uninfluenced toward its object by anything but His own pure grace.

Being recipients of such pure undeserved love is plenty enough. But there is more.

His love is infinite. That means, just as His wisdom is unlimited, for He never learns but knows everything, past present and future, His power is inexhaustible, as nothing is too hard for Him, so His love is beyond all measure. In other words, the height and breadth and depth of His love is beyond human valuation, beyond His creature’s assessment.

This is beautifully expressed in Eph. 2:4 “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which he loved us,” The word “great love” carries with it the idea that God’s love is immeasurably greater than anything we can fathom.

Paul says of God’s love, that it “surpasses knowledge..” (Eph. 3:19).

Yet, often Christians see God’s love like a waxing and waning moon. Or, like the word game kids play when they pluck seeds off a stalk of rye grass one by one, saying - he loves me, he loves me not, he loves me and so on.

God’s love is infinite; it is immeasurably greater than any of our failures, shortcomings and doubts. Why is that? Simply this. God is love. And because he has set His infinite redeeming love upon us, let us be grateful and worship Him for that and because of that.
