PSALM 59 — REVISED

A Victim of Slander

Have you ever been slandered by the ungodly around you? Or perhaps been the victim of malicious gossip? These kinds of attacks by the ungodly of the world are hurtful and cause much distress and pain. David is no stranger to these types of attacks. He describes these circumstances in Psalm 59. May you be encouraged at how David responds to evil.

David begins by first turning to God in is painful circumstances (1-2). He asks God for help in this situation beyond his control. He asks God to help him but putting him out of reach of those that want his ruin. He knows that he has done nothing that is deserving of their hatred and sinful attacks, other than living righteously (59:4).

The ungodly desire to hurt him and are treacherous with their lips (59:5-7). These people are described as dogs who go about at night in packs looking to cause trouble (59:6). They laugh, thinking that they can do what they want in secrecy (59:7). David knows that God is just and they will be caught in their lies and in their haughtiness (59:12).

Brethren, God sees and God knows what the ungodly are doing at all times. David says God laughs and scoffs at the ungodly of the world (59:8). Just as David trusts in God as his strength and refuge so you can as well. You can remember God’s love towards His people in every situation (59:10). Brethren, Christ is the Judge, and every person on earth will give God the glory He deserves (59:13). Knowing this, you can emulate David and sing praises to God even amid challenging times in your life (59:17). Trust in God when evil people slander you. God is your stronghold, and His love is unending (59:16-17).
