Urgent Help
One thing that I learned very quickly upon moving to Australia is that the number for emergency services is “000.” This was important because I have young kids and in the US it is “911”. When you are desperate straits you must know whom to call when you need help. It is more important that as believers, we remember that God is our true help in times of distress and need. How wonderful it is to know that God hears and answers the prayers of His people.
David is in a time of great distress and prays desperately for God’s help (1,5). This psalm permeates a sense of urgency (“hasten to my help”). He needs God’s help now! He needs God to do that which he cannot do himself. That is God’s help (5). Have you ever been in a desperate situation?
David prays for justice. Specifically, that his enemies would be dishonoured and defeated (2-3). They take great delight in his hurt (2)and taunt him, expecting his destruction at any minute (3). They act wickedly and seek his downfall. Brethren, know that you will face people who will delight in your your discomfort, suffering, and troubles because of your faith in Jesus Christ (2 Tim 3:12).
David knows that God’s mercy will bring relief and give believers reason to rejoice and magnify God (4). David is confident that God will act for his good. The end result of the trial will be that God is glorified by His people (4).
Brethren, trials in our lives are hard. They will often involve family and friends sinning against us because they do not understand our commitment to Jesus Christ as first in all things. When you do face hard circumstances, know that God is your help and hears your prayers.
