PSALM 86 — REVISED

Hear My Cry Oh Lord

Have you ever experienced a time a great trouble? Did those circumstances bring you to your knees? If so, then you can relate to David here in Psalm 86.

David begins by crying out to God for help (1-10). David is overwhelmed by the source of his distress and desperately needs God’s gracious help (2-3). He turns to “his” God and is persistent in his prayer (2-3). His prayers are offered up to God in faith, based on his personal covenantal relationship with YHWH. He knows that God is good, forgiving, and loving toward His people. There is no one like God in the heavens and on earth (5,10). All believers can call out to their God and know that He hears and cares for them.

David’s second plea is a prayer for guidance (11-13). David continues his prayer with a desire to know God in a greater way (11). He asks God to teach Him, and he promises to live his life in harmony with the revealed truth of Scripture. He desires a heart that is united in devotion to God. David’s prayer continues as his focus has shifted from his current plight to God Himself. He breaks out into praise, overwhelmed now with the character and wonderful works of God. He thinks of God’s great love for Him and His salvation from eternal judgment (13) Brethren, pray for a greater understanding of God and His will and you will not be disappointed.

David’s third plea is a cry for God’s grace and mercy in response to the arrogant and violent men that have risen up against him (14-17). David knows he needs strength to endure this trial (16). All believers can trust that God will help them and comfort them in times of distress (17).
