The Lord God Reigns!
The main point of this psalm is the everlasting kingship of the Lord. No power in heaven or an earth can compare with His might. God is sovereign over all aspects of His creation. This is a psalm that prompts God’s people to praise and worship Him. This psalm can be divided into three parts: The Lord Reigns (1-2), The Lord is Mighty (3-4), and The Lord is Holy (5). The psalmist begins by declaring that “the LORD reigns!” Believers throughout all of history have declared this fact (1). He is worthy of praise because He is great, sovereign, and awesome (2). His will cannot be thwarted, as it is set firmly in place (2). Unlike His creation, YHWH is eternal (2). Brethren, give praise to the Lord, for He is the everlasting God!
The psalmist contrasts the roaring seas with the Lord, and they are found wanting (3-4). The seas may rage in the storm, the rivers may flood their banks in a torrent, but the Lord is mightier than the floods. Nothing in all of creation, no matter how powerful, can compare to our God. Brethren, let us remember in the tumultuous storms that God is on high (4). Though the floods threaten to capsize us, God is still in control and ruling from on high.
The psalmist concludes this psalm by emphasising that God is trustworthy (5). His “testimonies,” are His Scriptures that He has given to His people. They are trustworthy because God is trustworthy. Finally, God is absolutely holy. He is unique, and His tabernacle among His people cannot be compared to anything (5). YHWH is a holy God and His people are to reflect His nature in this world.
