PSALM 100 — REVISED

Join The Assembly in Praise to YHWH

Psalm 100 is a psalm about worship; it is a call for all people to worship the Lord. Brethren, our praise is our response to the gracious salvation of our God.

The psalmist begins with four commands for those that would hear his message. First, he calls on all the earth to praise God with a joyful shout of acclamation to pay homage to the Sovereign King of the earth (1).

Second, believers should serve the Lord by singing with joy (2). This is the believers’ spiritual act of worship (Rom 12:1). Worship begins with the right heart, an attitude of gratitude and joy.

Third, the psalmist instructs his listeners to know the Lord (3). Knowledge of God is a prerequisite for proper worship. True knowledge of God comes only through a relationship with Him by faith (Jn 17:3). Knowledge of God produces humility and worship. YHWH alone is God and all other gods are false (3). He alone is our Creator and Great shepherd. As our Shepherd, He protects us, provides for us, and cares for us (3).

Last of all, the psalmist calls on believers to gather together in worship with God’s people (4). The call of the psalmist is to give public praise, public thanksgiving, and public blessing. To show thanksgiving to God is to publicly acknowledge His attributes and works, and to give Him glory (4). To bless the name of the Lord is to give YHWH public praise that elevates Him in the minds of others. Why should believers praise and worship God? The answer is in verse five, God is good! His covenant keeping love endures to His people forever. His promises will never fail (5).
