May God Be Exalted
This psalm is a combination of Psalm 57:7-11 and Psalm 60:5-11, both written by David. This psalm is a psalm of praise to the Lord. David desires that God would be exalted above all His creation. This psalm is focused on God Himself; mentioning His name six times (Elohim). David points the hearer’s attention on God’s love, mercy, and power demonstrated to His people. David is firmly established in his faith so that his affections are passionately directed to God. He extols His God from his heart, singing and publicly praising YHWH from the moment he awakes (1-6). His unwavering faith produces a joy in his heart that bursts forth into song. David declares the character of God; that He is full of lovingkindness and truth (3). He calls for God to be glorified above all, receiving the honour and worship He deserves (5). The end result of this praise is a call for God to deliver him from his distress (6). Brethren, our growing faith in the Lord should produce a joy that is not conditional on circumstances (Phil 4:4), but that is anchored in the unchanging character of Christ.
David ends this psalm by being encouraged in his faith by the word of God (7-13). God has declared to the nation of Israel that the land is His and He has given it to His people (7-8). God is sovereign even over Israel’s enemies (9). Without God’s help there can be no hope of victory (10-12). Victory over adversaries is not by the hand of man, but by the will of God (12-13). Brethren, be encouraged that God is with you always (Heb 13:5), and He will perfect you until the day of Christ Jesus (Phil 1:6).
