PSALM 112 — REVISED

The Blessed Life

This psalm tells us of the blessed state that is the life of a believer lived in the fear of the Lord. These blessed life from God for His people is a full and fulfilling one that continues into eternity.

The psalm begins by speaking of the blessed state of the believer who fears the Lord (1-3). Knowing God and Revering Him leads to a delight in His word and joyful obedience (1). Faithful obedience to God’s commandments will affect others around us. A believer’s descendants experience the rich spiritual and physical blessings that come from obeying God’s word (2). The Lord provides what His people need physically and spiritually, so that they can endure (3).

Those who fear the Lord demonstrate they love God in their love for others. In a dark world believers have the light of the Scriptures to guide them (4). They reflect that God’s light (His attributes) in all aspects of their lives. They are compassionate, gracious, and righteous, reflecting God’s character to those in need without expecting anything in return (4, 9). The person who is lives in such a way generally has a pleasant life in his relationships with others (5).

Believers can live securely, without fear because they live in fear of God (6). Their heart is steadfast in trusting in the Lord in all circumstances of life (7). God strengthens believers as they trust in the providence of God in their lives (8). A beautiful result of a faithful life is they become a memorial to successive generations (9).

The final blessing of the righteous is that they will see ultimate justice done by the Lord; in which their faith will be vindicated, and the wicked face ultimate justice (10).
