PSALM 114 — REVISED

God the Deliverer

If you have ever lived in a foreign country you know that the language barrier is significant. Depending upon your circumstances, you could feel quite alone and hopeless. That’s what the Israelites were feeling as they were suffering in Egypt. When they lived among the Egyptians the language was not their own and sounded strange to their ears (1). God saw their plight, heard their cries, and delivered His people with His mighty hand. He dwelt among His people as their covenant King (2). Brethren, God knows when your plight is dire and will give you the strength to bear up in trials. Wait on Him, for He will deliver you at the time He determines is best (1 Peter 5:6)

God demonstrated His mighty power to save His people (3-6). The Red Sea and river Jordan fled at His word (3,5). The mountains and hills quaked at His power (4,6). God goes to great lengths to save His people. Brethren, God has demonstrated His great power and the great lengths of His love in the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ. He has delivered us from our slavery to sin, and we are free to serve Him as our new Master (John 8:32).

All the earth should praise God in response to His great power shown in His salvation of Israel (7-8). In delivering the Israelites, He did great supernatural acts on behalf of His people (8). The world may not now be in awe of God’s mighty power demonstrated in the resurrection of Jesus. But there will come a day in the future when the entire world trembles in awe at the salvation of God’s people and the judgment to come. All will bow the knee to the Lord Jesus Christ (Phil 2:10-11).
