James' challenge to us is to restrain our speech. The proof of Christian character is controlling our tongue. Like a rudder on a ship or a bit on a horse, what we say has effects. What James calls us to is careful speech.

Being able to control the tongue is an evidence of maturity. We must bridle it if we are to be useful to the Lord. If we are made in God's likeness, it makes no sense for us to have hypocritical speech. Instead, may our speech reflect our new nature.
