PSALM 18

Let the God of my Salvation Be Exalted!

Have you ever taken some time to think back upon your life and praise God for His faithfulness? That’s what David doing here in Ps 18. He thinks back on God’s strength, refuge, deliverance, protection, provision, and lovingkindness and he cannot help but saying “I love you LORD” (1). Brethren, is your fellowship with God so intimate that you can say “I love you” and mean it?

David says that God is his “fortress,” “stronghold,” “shield,” and “horn of salvation” (2). David took refuge in God cried out in his distress, and He delivered him (4-19). David beautifully pictures the power and might of God in His actions on behalf of those who love Him (7-15).

There will be times of trouble for God’s people (17), yet God is in control and will reward His people for their faithfulness to Him (20-24). God’s present help and grace give believers the courage to face every circumstance (25-29, 30-42). We can trust God to accomplish His sovereign will in our lives as David trusted God to fulfil His promise to make him king (43-45). Believers can also trust God to execute justice upon the wicked and vindicate the righteous (46-48).

In light of God’s faithfulness to His promise, His care, protection, and salvation; David resolves to praise God publicly to both Israel and the world. Brethren, God is sovereign over your life as well; He works towards His ultimate goal, your Christlikeness (Rom 8:28-29). God honours his promises to His people; just as he will honour his promise to David that one of his descendants will rule forever (2 Sam 7) in God’s own Son, the Messiah, Jesus (18:50). Let us give thanks to God and sing His praises among the nations (18:49)!
