The Rock That Is Bigger Than Everything
In tough times what enables you to endure? The answer is Christ Himself. He is the Rock that is bigger and more powerful than you (1 Cor 10:4). He is inaccessibly high and exalted over the affairs of mankind. No situation in life is bigger than God.
In Psalm 61 David is overwhelmed by his situation and feeling distant from God (1-2). Though he feels distant from God, he knows that God is so much greater than his circumstances (2). He does not despair but remembers God’s protection of him in the past and asks for close fellowship even now (3-4). Brethren, you have God as your refuge and strength. Can you be content with Him?
David also prays confidently knowing that God hears his prayers, as they are prayed in accordance with His will. God has heard his sacred promises made in faith (5). God has been faithful to His promises regarding David. David takes comfort in God’s Davidic covenant (2 Sam 7), and the blessings on the kings of Israel with abundance life, and close fellowship with Him (6-7). Brethren, we are not Israelite kings, but we can pray back to God His promises to us, His church; and acknowledge that the source of our blessings both material and spiritual are God Himself (6-7).
David is a believer (5) and has drawn close to God in his hard circumstances. He has prayed for God to help him and draw close to him as he is in great need. He concludes this psalm with songs of praise (8). Nothing in David’s life has changed circumstantially. His focus and attitude have changed by the end of this psalm, and now he sings praises to God. Brethren, God is so much bigger than our circumstances.
