Fear God in Fearful Times
In Psalm 64 David is struggling with fear. He is keenly aware that evil people are scheming ways to bring about his downfall (64:2-4). They gather in secret councils (64:2) and are even ready to insight a tumultuous mob to accomplish their purposes (64:2-3). They are poised to strike suddenly and have no fear of any consequences (64:4-5). They are proud and confident in their “well-conceived plot” (64:6).
What does David do in the midst of such dire circumstances? He does what all believers must do? He turns to God in prayer. David begins with a cry to God asking for three things. He asks first, that God would hear his prayer and respond quickly (64:1). “Hear me” he says with urgency. He needs help at once from the Lord. Brethren, in fearful times remember that God is with you. Cry out to Him for help to endure the trial and resist the temptation to sin against others when they mistreat you.
David continues and asks that God would guard him from his fear of evil doers. It is his fear of the enemy and what they may do to him that is his greatest threat (64:1). He asks God to preserve him so that the schemes of the wicked will not continue to influence his mind and emotions. Brethren, only God can help you to overcome your fear of man through your faith in Him.
Brethren, true contentment arises from resting in the providence of God. David knows that God is his protector (64:7-9). He knows God will turn the ungodly’s evil schemes back against them (64:8). His faith in God is strong. He longs for the day of God’s judgement, for the world will respond in reverential fear of God and the righteous will respond with gladness (64:9-10).
