As our love for God is strengthened, so is our obedience. We can only love whom we know - and in John 18, we gain further glimpses of God's glorious nature.

The sovereignty of Jesus is displayed in John 18. In God's providence, Judas knew to find Jesus in the garden where He usually prayed. Although it was Judas' choice to betray Him, Jesus knew it was to happen.

The authority of Jesus is seen in the showdown between Jesus and the army. Judas brought with him no small gathering; but the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Romans all working together. Jesus approached them and asked whom they sought, and they fell back at the declaration of His divine name.

The submission of Jesus is seen in the seizure. Simon Peter lashed out at Malchus to defend Jesus, thinking the Messianic Kingdom was in danger. But Jesus didn't allow Peter to defend Him. Christ came to suffer first, and to take the wrath of God for all who believe in Him.
