Without the cross, there is no forgiveness and reconciliation, no Church, and no victory over sin and death. But the good news is that Jesus Christ died for our sins.

We see the glory of His sign in John 19. Christ willingly carried His cross, bearing the humiliation and suffering for us. Pilate had Him crucified with a sign over head: "JESUS OF NAZARETH, KING OF THE JEWS." Pilate wrote it in ignorance, but in God's providence it was the truth.

We see the glory of His sovereignty. Nothing about the crucifixion was an unfortunate accident, but God's plan revealed. Even as the soldiers gambled for His clothes, Old Testament prophecy was being fulfilled. Jesus was fully in control, and willingly gave up His life to save the Church.

The cross is far from a defeat. For those who believe, it is victory over sin and the world.
